What Is Depression?
Depression is an illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks. It negatively affects the way an individual thinks, feels and behaves. It is common in adults and is becoming more and more common in teens and adolescents.
Understanding and Identifying Child and Adolescent Depression
Teens experience a multitude of highs and lows as they go through high school and begin college or work. This is partially due to changing hormones but also due to the fact that they experience many changes in such a short period of time. It can be worrisome for parents to witness their teen upset and experiencing a low mood that has begun to disrupt some of their daily activities.
For example, they may not have the energy to be able to get out of bed, they may miss school or work, or it might seem like they are distancing themselves from their family and friends. Even when symptoms may not appear to be severe, untreated depression may pose a risk of harm to self, including self-harm and/or suicide.
Our Approach to Care / What To Expect
Our mental health team is here to help teens and adolescents manage their depressive episodes and help their families learn how to best support them. Sessions with a social worker or psychotherapist can include focusing on positive self-talk and how to challenge negative thoughts. Therapy can provide an outlet for your teen and help them talk about problems and feelings they may feel too embarrassed about to talk with a parent or sibling.
