TMJ orillia

Jaw pain can affect people in many different ways. It can be caused from either internal
structures like the bones/muscles in your body or by something that has happened externally.

Jaw Pain Can Be Caused By:

  • Jaw muscle tightness or weakness
  • Issues with the jaw disc (the disc sits between the two bones of your jaw joint and
allows for smooth movement of your jaw)
  • Genetics
  • The shape of your jaw bones
  • Arthritis
  • Neck issues
  • Tooth or gum-related issues
  • Jaw surgery
  • A direct blow to your jaw (i.e. punch/car accident)
  • Headaches
  • Persistent clenching

If your jaw joints don’t move nicely together, you may experience weird sensations within
your jaw. Or, maybe the muscles around your jaw joints may be working too much or not
enough. This can make them feel tight, tender, or sore. Jaw pain can also be coming from
your neck. This is called referral pain. How you move your neck and jaw throughout the day
is very important. These neck and jaw movements can either be contributing to your
discomfort, or certain movements can help relieve your pain. A physiotherapist can help
determine what movements you should limit doing and teach you other movements that can
help relieve your pain!
